Tell us about your personal wellness journey. What led you to where you are now?
I suffered from significant anxiety, post partum and PPMD for years after the birth of my first child. I also had 23 years of an undiagnosed significant gluten intolerance that led to severe anxiety. I explored many alternative ways to heal including yoga, microdosing, therapy, acupuncture, diet, and herbs. For me, regulating my nervous system, peeling back social conditioning and people pleasing, and working on my own trauma healed not only myself but also my family. I quit drinking alcohol in 2022, started my own business, and continuing to explore ways to heal myself and others. I use my own experiences in helping others heal their own traumas, anxiety, and depression.
How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was ready to make a move from non-profit work back to private practice in 2020. I opened my business hoping to create a space for folks interested in mental health therapy and holistic health. My husband actually named my company HSC Counseling (very engineering of him) and I finally decided on Healing Space Collective to evoke the idea that we need community to create healing spaces for folks for their mental health.
How did you start your business?
The beautiful piece is us 3 colleagues (and friends) created a space where each of us have our own business but we get to work together, share resources, and collaborate. We do courses and workshops together, support each other, and help each other problem solve. Sometimes being a therapist can feel really lonely so it's great that we have this community that we've created.
Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out?
I would have checked my imposter syndrome at the door. It can really make me stuck in my head and thinking through all the what if's instead of jumping into it (12th house stellium in Virgo!). Overall I'm glad I did it my way and at my own pace.
What is the best business advice you've ever been given?
Owning a small business means being a really good problem solver. Ultimately that is the majority of your job.
How do you persevere in challenging times?
I reach out to my people and help figure out solutions, vent, and support each other. I also make sure I'm taking care of my body and doing the things that support me during tough times (yoga, meditating, eating well, being in nature) because many times that's what we let go when things get tough.
What impact do you want your business to have?
I want to help people heal their nervous system and trauma so that they can show up in the world and experience being a human on this earth in all its complexities. So many people are numb, checked out, or reacting to their own stuff. If we can help people get back in their bodies and heal their wounds they can show up with love, compassion and curiosity in the present moment.
What knowledge would you share with someone who wants to become an entrepreneur of a wellness business?
Collaborate and reach out to your community. There is so much abundance in this world that there is more than enough resources, clients, work, and money. We just have to shift our own scarcity thinking and jump in.
What do you do for personal and professional development? (mentor, business coach, podcasts, etc.)
I love to do trainings/podcasts/books and find new ways to try things. I'm always learning and will take random classes for whatever special interest I'm currently into. Sometimes my ADHD brain goes overboard and I do too many things but overall I love to explore all my interests.
What mantra or quote do you live by?
We are spiritual beings having a human experience.
What is your favorite wellness activity or hobby?
I have too many. Yoga, making herbal remedies, saunas, and hiking are my current obsessions.
What are a few of your favorite wellness products, and why?
I have a lot of herbal tinctures I take to support overall health and nervous system regulation. I love using Rest Easy from Elderberry Boost that contains passionflower, valerian root, skullcap and catnip. When I take it I feel an overall sense of calm and reset. I take it during the day as a reset, but it's recommended for sleep at night.
What are some of your favorite wellness-related businesses to support?
My favorite go to wellness business is Bloodroot Herb Shop in Ypsilanti. Corinne and Alex have created a beautiful local shop that provides lots of herbal goodies. I recommend Replenish and Anchor tinctures to clients for nervous system support all the time.
